Francois Marentette

Francois Godet De Marantay (Dit Marentette Sr) 3/6/1719/20 - 5/24/1785

Francois Godet De Marantay A.K.A Dit Marentette (JAQUES 3, NICOLAS 2, NICOLAS 1) was born March 6, 1719/20 in Montreal, Quebec, and died May 24, 1785 in Assumption, Sandwich, Ontario.

François Godet received the title Sieur de Marantay while residing in FORT PONTCHARTRAN (Fort of Détroit). The name originated from François in the mid 1700. Today Marentettes are primarily in Essex county and Michigan. Marentettes were also part of the movement by wagon trains and settled in and around Eugene Oregon. Records show that in 1755, François Marentette along with the Janisse, Goyeau, Parent and Langlois families left the sanctuary of the Fort to establish homesteads on the south shore of the Detroit River. They became the first families of European descent to take permanent residency in what is known today as Ontario.

Francois Godet received the title "de Marantay" and this was later corrupted into Marentette which his descendants adopted later as their proper name.

His signaturee on the church register is as follows, " Francois Godet Des Rivieres." No one knows why.
